C76 Doujinshi Sales Rankings

Monday, August 24th, 2009

comiket_76_r-c-complex_saki_doujinshi.jpg

Major otaku stores (Tora no Ana, Melonbooks, etc.) frequently display lists of their Top 10 bestselling doujinshi, but the most watched rankings are always the ones in the weeks following Comiket.

As Comiket 76 ended last week, there is the interesting opportunity to inspect these  doujinshi rankings from three major Akihabara shops – Tora no Ana, Messe Sanoh and Melonbooks.

These rankings come via Akiba Hobby, which regularly keeps weekly records of such rankings.

These lists only apply to a specific brick and mortar store’s inventory (i.e., online sales excluded), and due to the  underground nature of doujinshi publishing and the vagaries of the consignment system typically used to sell the books in these stores  a huge discrepancy is obvious between the different store’s rankings, despite their relative proximity to each other.

Nonetheless, each of these stores have hundreds of different titles on hand at any given time, and their common customer base made up of the denizens of Akiba means these rankings should give some insight into  C76 doujinshi are proving to be among the most popular now that all doujin stores are well stocked with books from the event.

The following lists are all from August 22 and are identified with the following syntax: Title [Circle] (Series)

Links to the circle’s websites are also provided where possible.

Touhou Ita-Bus Roams Akihabara

Monday, August 17th, 2009

touhou_itabus_akiba_express_01.jpg

A Touhou themed ita-bus, bedecked with posters, banners and various sorts of memorabilia of the doujin games’ vast female cast of characters, was once again seen cruising the streets of Akihabara during the Comiket 76 weekend, a time when reclusive otaku can most likely be found outdoors.

The Touhou ita-bus, seen earlier this year during March to celebrate the Touhou only event Reitaisai, is operated by Akiba Express and features the work of several well known Touhou doujin artists.

Samurai Maid Café

mononopu-sengoku-maid-cafe-6.jpg

The latest in the interminable succession of novelty maid cafés to open in Akihabara is “Mononopu,” a café and bar whose theme is based on the sengoku jidai period, and whose “sengoku meido” waitresses wear a incongruous mix of maid outfits, kimono, and armour and swords.

mononopu-sengoku-maid-cafe.jpg

The café explains its existence thus: “Lord Moeda Nobunaga has taken princesses from all over the empire to use as hostages, and they are being made to earn their keep greeting patrons!”

A complex system of ranks and privileges for returning patrons also recreates a suitably feudal atmosphere.

The establishment does however fail to explain why its hostage princesses are wearing random bits of armour and weaponry…

Mimikaki Bloodbath as Stalker Goes Berserk

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

mimi-kaki-maid.jpg

A customer turned his favourite ear cleaning establishment into a scene of slaughter, killing the manageress and critically wounding the girl he so lusted after with knife and hammer.

In Japanese culture 耳かき / mimikaki, “ear cleaning,” occupies a special position, with many men attaching a strong and intimate significance to resting their head in the lap of a lady (“hizamakura”, lap pillow) who then cleans their ears with an ear pick. So much so that many establishments offer this experience for a fee.

In one such establishment, based in Tokyo’s Minato ward and operated by a 78-year-old lady and employing her 21-year-old granddaughter, a 41-year-old salaryman became a regular customer.

He would visit the ear cleaning parlour each weekend, spending as much as $4,000 each month to have his ears kept clean by the young lady. Soon it became clear that his interest in resting his head in her lap was based on more than just keeping his ears clean.

This culminated in him asking the girl out. She turned him down, and soon after the shop decided it had better bar him from the premises.

However, his infatuation was undiminished, and soon his mania degenerated into stalking, with police being called out.

His obsession soon took a tragic turn, for when next police were called to the establishment they found him covered head to toe in the blood of the two ladies, admitting “I stabbed them,” having apparently savaged the old lady and her granddaughter with a knife and a hammer.

The old lady died at the scene, whilst the girl remains hospitalised in critical condition, having not regained consciousness.

The man was immediately taken into custody and charged with the attacks.

The establishment in question is in fact part of a large chain which began in Akihabara; an hour of ear cleaning in such a shop costs about ¥5,000, which includes various massages.

However, no sexual services are normally offered at such establishments, and the girls working there treat it as normal work rather than an aspect of the sex trade, though as competition intensifies some establishments are now offering sexual services.

According to one writer familiar with the trade, “There is a good deal of contact, and patrons and girls can be on first name terms. Often the men who go there are more interested in the girls than in getting their ears cleaned, but dislike hostess bars.”

Many patrons are said to be shy young men, and the girls working in the trade complain of stalking being rife.

Kigurumi Terror Café

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

waitress08.jpg

The latest innovation in the maid cafe market is a kigurumi cosplay café, where maids of indeterminate gender clad in unblinking anime styled masks will charm or terrify patrons…

The event will thankfully only last one day; those interested in attending, or perhaps simply keen to make sure they can avoid it, will find Kigurumi Cafe Aokazetei opening on the 25th.

Ten waitresses showcase typical anime character traits:

After the shimapan café, who knows what we will see in the future?

Shimapan Café

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

shimapan-cafe-3.jpg

The latest desperate effort from Akihabara’s maid café industry is a shimapan themed café event…

shimapan-cafe-7.jpg
shimapan-cafe-4.jpg
shimapan-cafe-5.jpg
shimapan-cafe-6.jpg

Waitresses at the event appeared in only a T-shirt and striped pantsu (actually bikini bottoms, which for some inexplicable reason are “decent” where actual pantsu are not).

shimapan-cafe.jpg

The café event was tied in with the release of a tawdry vibrating oshiri gimmick: “Shaking Hip” – patrons might be forgiven for taking more interest in the waitresses.

In case you are wondering, Japanese usage of the word “hip” tends to confusedly refer to both hips and posterior, which accounts for the often idiosyncratic usage.

You can see more at source AkibaBlog.

The maid café business might have a few otaku fetishes left to tap, but with the likes of “nopan shabu-shabu” (bars with mirrored floors and pantsu-less waitresses, the cause of political scandal some years ago) already legend, they might wish to take a closer look at what goes on in Shinjuku and Roppongi for further inspiration…

Akiba Skirt Slicer Captured

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

gundam-00-tieria-skirt-trap-action.jpg

A man who developed and exercised the disturbing fetish of cutting the skirts of women he stalked about town has finally been arrested.

The man, a 24-year-old salaryman, was found to have approached a lady riding an escalator in an Akihabara shop, standing behind as she rode. Whilst doing so, he surreptitiously snipped away at her skirt with a pair of scissors, cutting some 7cm of her skirt.

His unsuspecting victim returned to her workplace only to have the gaping gash in her skirt pointed out by a colleague, at which point she reported the incident to police. Fortunately she was able to describe his clothes to police, who picked up the culprit still loitering in the same area.

When confronted with the charges, he confessed: “I did it to satisfy my lusts. Cutting skirts gave me pleasure. I did it many times…”

He was arrested on charges of property damage, but it is common for police to make such arrests immediately and then add additional charges later, which might see him charged with other offences.

Evangelion Maid Café Event Opens in Akihabara

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

evangelion_ayanami_maid.jpg

Readers in the vicinity of Akihabara would likely be interested in noting that over the next month the CURE maid café will be in its new Evangelion mode, to go along with the new release of the Evangelion : 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance movie.

This was the same café that recently held its Fate/stay Night event, and so this means a new menu of Eva-influenced dishes and drinks, along with the appropriate decorations to the interior.

This particular café, one of the earliest and best known progenitors of the maid café concept, constantly remodels itself to fit a specific series (several past events are covered in the maid café tag), so the particulars of this newest Eva event should be not be surprising.

Menu:

A4-1

From left to right, top to bottom…

  • Misato-san’s Special Pen-Pen Meal
  • Angel Parfait
  • Angel Cake
  • Nerv Cake

Drinks:

A4-1

Again, from left from right…

  • Shinji Ikari (Blue Hawaii + Blueberry Soda)
  • Rei Ayanami (Blue Hawaii + Grapefruit)
  • Asuka Langley Shikinami (Grenadine + Orange)
  • Mari Illustrious Makinami (Melon Syrup + Orange)
  • Kaworu Nagisa (Grapefruit + Ginger + Blue Hawaii + Cherry)

At the bottom is “Ritsuko’s Coffee”, costing ¥1,700 but at least coming along with that attractive nerv mug!

A3POP_1

The coasters above come along with the drinks.

This latest Eva Café is still rather new and so detailed photos of the interior have still to emerge, but it should be quite similar to last year’s Eva event at the same café:

evangelion_maid_cafe_04.jpg

evangelion_maid_cafe_05.jpg

evangelion_maid_cafe_06.jpg

This was likely the scariest dish in the menu for some customers.

evangelion_maid_cafe_07.jpg

The current Eva Café event will run until July 26th, making this particular event longer than most for the café.

More information is available at the CURE official website.

Police Raid Akiba Doujin Shop, Arrest Manager for Loli

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

beako-bookshop.jpg

Police are said to have raided the Akihabara branch of doujin bookshop Tachibana Shoten, confiscating “suspected loli material”, in circumstances which remain murky.

There is speculation that this is part of an impending crackdown on loli manga, though this is unsubstantiated.

The situation is not, however, straightforward.

At least one report specifies that the manager of the shop was arrested for distributing “suspected loli material,” and that police confiscated the materials in question, though the shop in question (part of a larger chain with branches throughout Tokyo) also stocked much idol material, and it is not specified whether the arrest related to illustrated or photographic material.

Thus, there is a significant possibility the report relates to either “young idol” material, which has recently been subjected to greatly elevated police attention with the tightening of laws against 3D loli materials, along with numerous arrests of distributors and producers, or to material which is otherwise legally dubious, such as uncensored material or similar.

Interestingly, it is said the shop stocked much “paipan” material, referring to the fetishistic treatment of shaven girls.

Regarding the notion that this is part of an effort to ban 2D loli, whilst this is not something which anyone could reasonably put past the police and politicians, there does not appear to be much in the way of firm evidence for this, and there are of course no laws against drawn loli as yet.

There is also the question of why this particular shop was targeted, and not any of the numerous others continuing to trade in the same material, implying this shop was perhaps operating differently.

What is clear is that the Diet will shortly be discussing the status of anti-loli laws, so this action is certainly timely…
