Haruhi & Full Metal Alchemist DVD Sales Upsets

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

mikuru-haruhi-nagato-sos-dan.jpg

The sales figures for the Haruhi’s Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody DVD, the first of the “new material,” and the first of the remade Full Metal Alchemist DVDs, have been published.

Haruhi DVD “4″ sold 21,812 in its first week, versus 28,729 for the very first DVD. Not a complete collapse, but hardly something which augurs well for the future, and probably the death knell for any future large-scale productions.

K-ON! by comparison has now nearly managed 50,000, demonstrating the age has truly shifted to that of K-ON!, which at least eschews an obnoxious protagonist and nonsensical storyline in favour of cheerfully vapid moe blobbery.

Far more of an upset is the dire performance of the Full Metal Alchemist remake – the first DVD sold a mere 12,578 copies, compared to 21,450 for the original, which went on to sell an abnormal 64,992 copies in total.

Even the pricey box set of the original series, cunningly released before the new series was on the scene, sold 14,544 in its first week.

With the ongoing ratings collapse for the TV broadcasts, its sales do not look set to improve…

The real question is of course how well the Endless Eight DVDs will do; anything less than a disastrous performance would be a damning indictment of the current state of the anime market and the otaku DVD collectors who drive it…

PS3 Slim Sells Out

ps3-slim-2_0.jpg

Sony’s last hope for revitalising its flagging videogame business this generation is apparently a huge success, with a host of Japanese retailers selling out of the PS3 Slim completely before the general release has even begun…

A quick tour of big name Japanese game and electronics retailers reveals inventory has all but dried up; confirmed as being completely sold out are Amazon, Yamada Denki, Sofmap, ubook, eDeji and Rakuten, with Bic, Yodobashi, Geo and Joshin having sold out of the Gundam bundle but not (yet?) the bare console.

Of course, no one would put it past Sony to deliberately restrict supply to stores in order to create “sold out!” headlines and create an air of rarity and desirability, as some might suspect Nintendo of doing with its hugely successful Wii when that was first released…

Nagaru Tanigawa “Has Started” New Haruhi Novel

Haruhi author Nagaru Tanigawa has finally started work on the long anticipated but hugely delayed (as below) “Suzumiya Haruhi no Kyougaku / The Shock of Haruhi Suzumiya” light novel, the first in many years.

sorry-haruhi-delay.jpg

Previous announcements relating to the title, once due in 2007, always turned out to be lengthy delays, to the point that the once popular series appeared to have been abandoned, but this seems not to be the case now, as in a recent edition of The Sneaker he is described as being in the process of readying the novel.

tanigawa-started-work.jpg

Whilst it seems for all intents and purposes the Haruhi franchise is finished after having been driven into ground, it will be interesting to see whether Tanigawa manages a worthy continuation after so long a hiatus.

There is of course the intriguing possibility that he long ago succumbed to writer’s block or totally lost interest in the series, and only now is finally having his arm twisted into finishing it, a possibility which does not bode well for the quality of future installments…

Agarest Senki Massacred by Anime Haters

Xbox 360 and PS3 breeding ero-RPG Agarest Senki, to be known as Agarest: Generations of War in its European incarnation, clearly had too much in the way of beautiful anime art for the publisher, who decided to change it to something unrecognisably manly.

The protagonist as he originally appeared:

The Japanese version was rated a C (15+) on Cero’s scale, being packed full of banana fellatio and bikini service, whereas the European cover here is given a PEGI “12” rating, so it seems probable the game has been completely Bowldlerised, with all the juicy banana licking scenes removed.

However, a visit to the game’s homepage reveals that for the past several months they have had this charming image as their header:

agarest-homepage.jpg

“COMING soon” indeed.

It seems nothing will disavow international publishers of the notion that games including creepy Chinese cartoons need to be given manful CG art, as seen recently in CG Tales and international Star Ocean localisations, though it is clear this only serves to alienate actual anime and JRPG fans, whilst having questionable impact on the store-going general public…

PS3 Slim Slower Than PS3?

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

ps3-slim-xbox-360-comparison-4.jpg

Sony’s much vaunted PS3 Slim is practically released, allowing curious testers to make the shocking discovery that the slimline version is actually slower than the corpulent original.

The comparison videos below demonstrate the apparent differences:

However, another set of videos seem to show it being slightly faster:

Rumours circulate that some differences may be caused by differences in harddrive, but in this case the maker of the video claims the same 7200RPM HDD is installed in each.

Of course, the discrepancies could also be due to mysterious differences in firmware or hardware, or simply random fluctuations.

Whatever the cause, it seems very unlikely Sony will be admitting any undocumented performance difference, positive or negative, between the models.

Japanese Women Demand Rich Husbands

Friday, August 28th, 2009

fantasy-wedding.jpg

Survey results have found 60% of Japanese women seek a husband with an annual income of over $70,000 (in fact 20% look for twice this much), but statistics show that the average income for men in Japan is only $44,000.

The results once again suggested the reason for collapsing marriage rates in Japan may be overwhelmingly tied to the unrealistic income expectations of several generations of women who apparently consider little else in their choice of partner.

Japanese women have long been known to care chiefly about their potential partner’s income and their ability to hijack it, and the results seem to confirm this: when asked about the most important thing they sought in a partner, 34.3% of women answered “income,” versus 3.2% of men.

Similarly, 22.8% of women considered “occupation” to be the most important, versus 3.4% of men.

Women even considered the educational background of men, with 5.9% concerned about this against 2% of men.

Another survey looked at the ideal annual income Japanese women sought in a man; the most popular answers were “over $90,000” with 22.8%, and “over $70,000” again with 22.8%. 19.3% were seeking over an income of $130,000 or more.

These figures appear to have actually increased from those of a previous survey, which found only 10% seeking incomes of over $100,000.

These women were then asked what their compromise figures were; 38.8% would settle for an income of “merely” over $50,000, 24% for over $70,000, and 14.8% for over $30,000.

To put these numbers in perspective, the average income for a Japanese man in his thirties is some $50,000, and for one in his forties it rises to $64,000.

The key to securing the “heart” of a Japanese woman appears to be high income, high height, and high grades. In contrast, men are seen in these surveys to be seeking a caring nature, and a partner they feel comfortable with, and increasingly want a woman who will pursue their own career.

The traditional explanation for low birth rates and rates of marriage in Japan has been to blame it on sexism, but these kinds of results hardly support such a conclusion…

Endless Eight DVD Masterstroke

Friday, August 28th, 2009

creepy-suzumiya-haruhi-in-bikini.jpg

Kadokawa’s marketing genius continues with the confirmation that Haruhi fans will in fact be expected to buy four volumes of Endless Eight on DVD, though apologists point out that this does at least mean the discs and their content can be avoided completely.

All the DVDs for the “new episodes” have recently been put on Amazon, ending any further speculation about legitimate episodes being mixed together with Endless Eight or otherwise, although almost all sources involved in the sale of the DVDs discretely refrain from mentioning what episodes the discs contain.

Extras are comprised mainly of extra art. The various discs are up for pre-order now, should anyone be masochistic or obsessive enough to buy them. The bizarre numbering is explained in a previous article.

Needless to say, everyone is desperate to see the sales figures for these four volumes…

Microsoft: $100 Xbox Cut “Nothing To Do With” PS3 Slim

Friday, August 28th, 2009

xbox-360-rrod.jpg

Microsoft has taken care to assure everyone that its slashing of the Xbox 360 Elite’s price by $100 has nothing whatsoever to do with Sony’s imminent release of the PS3 Slim.

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg, boss of product management for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, told a journalist:

“Typically these types of price changes are targeted to drive sales for the holiday season. However it is difficult for our retail partners to make these types of changes in November or December so we try to work with them to make these types of adjustments before things get too hectic at retail.”

Nothing at all to do with Sony.

Being a hopeless PR flack, he also leaps on the chance to rubbish the PS3 when asked what he thinks about it:

“I guess as a gamer, I am glad I got an earlier PS3 console before they pulled a lot of the functionality like backwards compatibility out.”

Curiously, Microsoft dropped support for “Xbox Originals” earlier in the year, and by now many early adopters of the Xbox 360 are rather familiar with the company’s very reasonable warranty offering…

Axolotl Boom: From Pet to Foodstuff

From favourite childhood pet to fried delicacy, it appears the fortunes of the Axolotl (the neotenous larval form of the Mexican Salamander) have fallen on hard times…

fried-axolotl.jpg

A blind tasting of one of the creatures reveals how delicious it is (they are not uncommonly eaten in their native country of Mexico), and an interview with a commercial Axolotl fishery in Japan reveals that (culinary) supply and demand are brisk:

The boom is particularly painful for some, as the creatures became popular childhood pets in one of Japan’s short-lived marketing booms in the 1980s, after a TV commercial for the still extant “UFO” brand of yakisoba ramen featured one of the animals; the name was soon popularly altered from “Axolotl” to ウーパールーパー / Uupaaruupaa after the advert:

It seems they were a victim of their own popularity, as once the boom subsided one of the very companies supplying them had a surplus and opted to switch its marketing efforts to culinary usage; now they are considering exports to China and Korea.

However, everyone agrees that they are delicious, so such objections seem not to have much traction, at least amongst those tasting them.

2ch for its part is almost universally horrified by the practice, a stark contrast to its usual defence of eating whales and dolphins as “they are no different from cows or fish, you eat those don’t you?”…

gundam-wedding-real-01.jpg

The first Gundam themed wedding event, which was organised by T&G for gundam fans has gone ahead without hitch. The lucky couple were chosen out of a substantial pool of nearly 500 hopeful Gundam fan couples.

The couple, both long time fans of the original series, chose this special package to renew their vows under the imposing 1/1 scale of the RX-78 model Gundam.

They are apparently huge fans of the show, and even named their daughter “Seira”, after the character Sayla Mass.

Along with the Gundam towering over them, the groom wore a suit that based on the uniform of Amuro Rei, the main protagonist of the original series. Also present was the original director of the series, Tomino Yoshiyuki, who handed the happy couple a special gift.
